Named after an x-ray emitting black hole in an elliptical galaxy, HLX-1 is the largest scale work in the parabola series.

Like the others in the series, this work was first cast as a solid resin slab, then carved with a parabolic taper, bringing the center to a thickness of less than 1/8th of an inch.

It is the change in thickness that creates the gradient of opacity, from opaque at the edges to transparent at center.

The piece was painstakingly polished for two weeks to bring the surface finish to an ultra-high gloss.
