A relic of volcanic activity on our planet, this boulder seems as if it were from another world.
Vesta, created during my stay in Utah amidst the pandemic, stood as a singular shape among the other boulders in the field.
Investigating its origins took me back 60 million years to its tumultuous creation, and then forward to 30 million years ago, when it was encased in a glacier and transported hundreds of miles to where it was left to lie.
In carving stone, I am compelled to humble myself before history, confronted with all that this material has endured. Now, its legacy intersects with mine, and as I proceed, my marks become part of its ongoing story.
